Evaluation Question- 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

To answer this question I decided to split it into four different sections; the construction and research, planning and the evaluation of my short neo noir film.

Part One- Research
A Blendspace document presenting all the media technologies used in planning
Disclaimer- In the clip I refer to the video as being based on the planning process, this is an error and is meant to say research, please ignore this title!

Part Two- Planning
To begin my planning in a group we started with brainstorming and mind mapping different ideas and concepts we could include in our neo noir film. I then developed these plans onto my blog in as many different forms and layouts as possible by using different media technologies.

In planning on of the first media technologies I used was an app called Animoto. I found this very simple and easy to use yet it produced a professional interesting result.

Link to previous Animoto videos that I have created in the planning process of our short film:

We then as a group decided we needed a way to plan our filming scheduled, props and other relative filming ideas. Therefore we decided to create a Facebook chat with all of the members of our group.

We found Facebook was a quick and efficient way of communication and due to us all having WiFi on our phones it meant we could communicate whist out and be able to sort things out quickly.
As you can see from the images we used this group to share images, videos and ideas throughout the group. We also used it to plan our filming days.

I then decided to create our group an opening institution logo. I had to research around to find the right type of software to use to create the final product that we desired. I cam to conclusion the Adobe After Effects would be the best efficient way of creating this opening logo.

I wanted to expand on my skills from last year and create a more animation opening sequence. To do this I began by creating the logo with the font Trajan pro 3, I felt this was the best match to the plans we had created before in my blog post 'Title fonts and Ideas' In this post we also included our audience feedback in which most people liked the font that I tried to recreate in our logo. Link to the blog post below:

To create the animation to the clip i had to download a clip of a smoke effect coming across the screen. This took a lot of research as i wanted it to appear as film noir as possible and therefore needed to keep the image appearing dark and mysterious. Here is the final video I chose:

I then had to combine the two and make the text and video blend together. Here is the final product:

Part Four- Evaluation

Evaluation Question- 3

Disclaimer- This video has some sound issues near the middle of the clip that I couldn't fix.

Evaluation Question- 2

Here is my answer to question two:

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

To present this I adapted the style of this video, including more interactive videos, screen shots and varied the layouts.

Evaluation Question- 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

To answer the evaluation question one, I decided to create four separate videos using a software called Wondershare. I then put them together on a Blendspace document. I included clips from our own film and comparative clips from other film noirs. I also included screenshots and screen recordings.

Film review and analysis

I'm creating my own film poster fir 'Lockdown' I decided to research other media magazine film reviews. most media magazine reviews are all heavily influenced by Empire magazines. Here are some examples of an Empire media magazine.

The layout is overall very simplistic and effective. I aimed to emulate this design for my own review by dominating the page with a secondary image of the film followed by an analysis and review of the film. I took my main inspiration from a review taken from Empire magazine based on the film 'New Moon'.

Opening Institution logo

To create the opening logo for our film 'Lockdown' I used a software called After effects. I added a clip to the background of smoke clouding over the text, this makes the atmosphere eerie and links our institution to our film. Our film includes cigarette smoke and obscuring angles creating an overall sense of unknowing.

Character Analysis

Institution Logo

We started planning our institution logo. To begin with we wanted to keep the text simplistic and clean cut. We had the text written in capitals horizontally. Although we liked the appearance of this we felt it was too basic and didn't leave a lasting effect on the audience.

We then developed the text into a vertical layout, we felt this appeared more interesting however one we asked members around they said it was slightly unclear to read.

We felt the the text was too unclear and needed to be thicker therefore we made the letter thicker to stand out more. Underneath the font we included 'media productions'

Our final draft was with the letters 'g' and 'd' shaded in. This created more dynamic to the image and although it still appears clean cut and professional.

We then transfered our designs onto word. Keeping the design simplistic and clear. We felt adding a blue background made the font stand out more.

Using a software called After effects I created the logo with a black background and white font. The smoke was added for effect to make the logo appear more neo noir.

Brief Narrative Plan

Title fonts and ideas

We began by collecting some possible font ideas for our film 'The Lockdown' we then decided to ask some members to choose which font the felt would best suit a film noir, mystery/ detective film to help us choose our final font.

Neo Noir Costume Plan

Femme Fatale Costume

Dress 1- We decided to have the femme fatale in a tight red dress, the red due to the connotations of blood, danger, and lust. The reveling style of the dress makes the femme fatale appear seductive and manipulative. We centered around creating a glamorous bold character.
Dress 2- Still very similar to the first dress bold, and bright; we wanted the femme fatale to stand out. The character of the femme fatale is being presented as a binary opposite to the wife, she is in stark contrast to her as she is wearing bright seductive clothing and expensive accessories.

Dress 1 (with jacket) - we decided to add a leather jacket not only for practical reasons due to the typical British weather, but because it creates a 'bad girl' vibe about our character, it makes the character relate more to the protagonist as she appears to not follow the rules as much.

Suit- We wanted the protagonist to look powerful and wealthy, we chose an expensive suit as it makes him look important and smart, as if he takes his job seriously.

Purple Tie- In addition to the suit we wanted the protagonist to wear a purple tie because the colour purple connotes wealth and luxury. This emphasizes his profession and how he takes his job seriously.

Wife Costume

Black Cardigan- The wife of our film noir is going to be wearing dark dull colours to mirror her personality in the film. We want her to strongly contrast to the femme fatale as she will be wearing dark unflattering clothing.

Black trousers- Plain black straight line trousers, are still very simplistic and dull.

White blouse- The white blouse shows shes a serious character. It presents her as someone who possibly works and is an independent woman.

Apron- This apron is to show the wife as a stereotypical 1950's housewife. She is shown as hardworking and innocent. e want the audience to sympathize with the character as her husband doesn't respect or show affection for her.
